THOSE FRAULEINS
SMART AND COQUETTISH (From our Correspondent.) (By Air Mail.) LONDON, December 13. A stalwart young Irish Guardsman, now home on leave in London from Berlin, has given me some of his personal impressions of conditions in that shattered capital. He cordially dislikes and distrusts the Germans, and is convinced that in their hearts, most, if not all of them, are still silently chanting the ‘ Hymn of Hate.’ Most of them are outwardly whining. His experience of black' marketing, and other features of Berlin’s post-war life, conform to what most of tis have read. But what most impresses this youngster is the immaculate turn-out of the women. Every day, lie says, you see them issuing from ruined cellars and other Unattractive shelters, and yet invariably they manage to look as smart as: paints—clean, well attired, and coquettish. - They mostly also appear to be perfectly well fed. He believes the German womenfolk are even more fanatically imbued with “Hitlerism” than most of the men. Many of them even flaunt the fact. -The “ education ” of Germany, in his opinion, will be a long and dubious task.
