GREEK ELECTIONS

BRITISH TROOPS NOT INVOLVED LONDON, December 22. “ It is not part of our policy that Imperial troops should be involved in the preparation or carrying out of the Greek elections,” said the British officer commanding in Greece, Lieutenantgeneral Sir Ronald Scobie. “ The role of the British Army will be restricted to the necessity of supporting the Greek authorities in the maintenance of law and order if called on to do so. Some officers will be required to swell the number of Allied observers.

“ It became necessary last December for our troops to take action to maintain the Greek State. Since then there has been a steady improvement in internal security and progress towards the"establishment of an atmosphere in which free and fair elections can take place.” '
