JEWISH IMMIGRATION TO PALESTINE. CRITICAL MOMENT AT HAND LONDON, December 23. Jewish immigration to Palestine has now stopped altogether, says the ‘ Observer’s ’ Jerusalem correspondent, since Mr Ernest Bevin’s statement that 500 Jews would be allowed to enter Palestine every month pending the Joint Commission’s report. The Arab leaders expressed opposition to any continuance of' immigration. The correspondent added that at present it appears as if the' Palestine Government has no authority to issue further certificates to immigrants and Palestine is awaiting the decision of the British Government, which must now decide whether immigration is ceasing or continuing ' against Arab wishes. The issue is of great importance iu the Middle East and the decision may set off the powder barrel which is needing only one spark for ignition. The Haifa District Court acquitted the master and five members of the crew of the Greek vessel Dcmetrios on charges'of aiding persons illegally to enter Palestine. H.M.S. Peacock intercepted the Demetrios on November 22 off Sidna Ali coastguard station. The prosecution failed to prove that 20 passengers aboard were illegal immigrants.
