BRITISH RECOGNITION
REPUBLIC OF YUGOSLAVIA U.B. NOT WHOLLY SATISFIED LONDON., December 23. Britain has recognised the new Yugoslav Republic in a Note handed to the Yugoslavian Ambassador in London yesterday. Ft is in reply to a Note received from Yugoslavia on December 8, declaring that Yugoslavia had established a Federative People’s State in republican form, and abolished the dynasty of Kara Georgevitch and deprived King Peter of all his rights. The British reply says the Government recognises the changed Constitution in Yugoslavia, and assumes that the new Government is accepting the responsibility of existing international obligations, and also that the interests and rights of British subjects in Yugoslavia will not be affected. The United States has also extended formal recognition to the new Yugoslav Government, and has announced the appointment of Mr Richard 'Patterson at Belgrade. At the same time, the State Deparment has released instructions to Mr Patterson, criticising the recent Yugoslav elections as not fully free, and recalling that Yugoslavia has not honoured her pledges to extend basic freedoms to her people. It is added that the United States wishes to make it clear that the establishment of diplomatic relations should not be interpreted as approval of Marshal Tito’s policies.
