FORGED CURRENCY
BANK OF ENGLAND NOTES CIRCULATION IN DOMINION Forged (Bank of England notes of all high denominations have appeared in New Zealand, according to advice received by the Treasury Department from the chief cashier of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. It is understood that the police have been notified, but it is not thought that any of the forgeries have yet appeared. Government departments have been warned, and instructions have been given that IBank of England notes of a higher denomination than £1 should not under any circumstances he accepted. A cable message received from London in October stated that Bank of England £5 notes would shortly be replaced by a new type of note. Forged Bank of England £5 notes, it was stated, were widely circulating on the Continent, and it was also, for. exchange reasons, advisable to isolate even genuine £5 notes held abroad. It was stated that the old notes were not yet being called in and would remain legal tender for some time. ■Counterfeit bank notes also made tbeir appearance in New Zealand earlier this year. In May two forged Bank of New Zealand £1 notes were detected at Dargaville and two were found in Auckland. It is believed that few of the forgeries were placed in circulation, as no similar counterfeit notes were discovered.
