BRABIN SHIELD
OTAGO V. CANTERBURY Dull, cool' weather saw the opening of the Brabixt. Shield cricket'match between Otago 'and Canterbury young players at Carisbrook this morning. Overnight rain had made the wicket dull, but it played easy at the start. Otago had first use of.it, and L. Watson and J. Hall opened to the bowling of Smart and Kinley, the former a right-hand medium-pace bowler and the latter left-hand medium, , but a bit slower. ■ In Smart’s second over he took Hall’s leg stump. 2—-1-—l. The Carisbrook batsman, R. Caradus, who has been scoring freely this season for the Dunedin-Carisbrook B combine, was next, and runs came quietly, the first 10 taking 20 minutes: to appear. The first boundary hit came after 35 minutes’ play, Watson getting Kinley through the covers. Reid, also leftstill another left-hander, came on at the other end.
The wicket appeared to be cutting up a little, and the batsmen were occasionally bothered. They got in some sound drives, however,' and 38 came up- for the first hour’s play. With no further addition Watson hit a ball to point" and ran. It was well fielded by Coull. and Watson was run out. 38—2—18; R. Chalmers filled the gap, and the second 4 of the day came from an. off-drive by Caradus; this brought up 50 in 75, minutes, a second 4 following in the same over. Caradus was going down the pitch to the slows and was now, scoring freely. Chalmers also opened out a little, and this , brought Smart on at the Workshops end. The change was effective, Caradus being bowled with the fourth bail. G7 —3—34. He had been at the wickets 70 minutes.
