FICTITIOUS MARKS
ILLEGAL SALES OF PORK (P.A.) NAPIER, November 7. ‘I This company seems to be acting (pretty deliberately,” said the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers) to-day when a jury in the Supreme Court, after a retirement of more than four hours, returned a verdict of guilty in the action in which the firm of J. B. Fletchers Ltd., butchers, of Hastings, was charged with breaches of the Sale of Pork Restriction Order. The Crown evidence was that inspectors discovered five carcasses of fresh pork in the company’s chiller bearing unauthorised stamps. “ I may say at once that I draw my own inference from the marks on the carcasses,” said His Honour. “These marks were fictitious. The case is a bad one.” ■ ■ , His Honour referred to the three previous convictions of the company and indicated to counsel that he would hear legal argnment on Friday as to which set of regulations the penalty should be 'imposed under. One provided for a maximum penalty of £IOO. and the other for a maximum of £I.OOO. He intimated that he would restrain himself in ini nos in? the penalty if lie discovered that he was not bound by the maximum.
