Integrity made a bad beginning and lost 48 yards, but quickly picked up. Gold Bar immediately shot to the front, and it looked as if he was going to assume his usual role. But, en this occasion, he not only made the pace a cracker out in front, he stayed there. He was six lengths clear at the end of three furlongs, and was follower], by Double Peter, Dusky Sound. Shadow (Maid, War Guard, Loyal Friend, and Happy Man. Tho positions behind him fluctuated from then, but Gold Bar could not be headed. Near the mile he was 14 lengths clear from Double Peter, Happy Man, Dusky Sound, War Guard, Integrity, Shadow Maid, Haughty, and Bronze Eagle, all in close order, with Indian Clipper out of it. With six furlongs to go Gold Bar was still 12 lengths in front, by which time Integrity had made a forward move. Within the last half-mile War Guard issued a brief challenge, but it was left to Integrity to bridge the gap. Integrity put in a desperate burst in the straight, but Gold Bar hung on grimly to win by a length and a-half, with the little-fancied Shadow Maid in third place, and Countless fourth. Gold Bar and his driver, Allan Holmes, received a tremendous ovation from the greatest crowd ever seen at Addington. Times: 4.16 1-5, 4.16 3-5, 4.19 1-5, 4.19 3-15. CANTERBURY HANDICAP, £875. 2m.
