MR H. J. CLELAND

The death occurred in Wellington last week of Mr Hugh J. Cleland, at the age of 82 years. For many years he was a familiar figure in business and sporting circles in Otago. He was a foundation member of the Dunedin Engineers' Corps, which was formed at the time of the Russian war scare. In the early 'eighties he played Association football at Tahuna Park when sides had to be picked for a game. He was a life member of the Otago Chess Club, and was for 30 years a member of tho Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen's Association. He was also interested in Masonic affairs, and was a P.M. of the Mount Ida Lodge, Nasebv. Mr Cleland's wife predeceased him some. 13 years ago, and he is survived by a family of five—three daughters and two sons.
