TROUBLE AT SINGAPORE

CHINESE PICKETS HOLD UP COOLIES

LONDON, October 22

Well-organised pickets, mostly young Chinese, prevented Singapore dock coolies from going to work this morning, with the result that only a few hundred out of an estimated labour force of 70,000 reported for work, says Reuter’s Singapore correspondent. British troops and Japanese prisoners carried on the most urgent work. The authorities blame agitators for most of the trouble.

Labour unions are protesting against the arrest of 10 members, and allege that the union president was ifitreated when lie applied for their release.
