LABOUR DAY SPORTS

HILLSIDE CLUB’S SUCCESS CALEDONIAN MEETING WELL SUPPORTED From the point of view of public support, the Hillside Amateur Athletic Club’s meeting yesterday at the Caledonian Grounds proved the best Labour Day meeting held in years. The weather, after keeping most people citybound for the week-end, proved inviting enough to entice a crowd estimated at between two and three thousand out for the afternoon. The programme was run through smartly and to time, and was attractively varied, although some of the events could have been more strongly supported. The officials, and particularly the secretary (Mr J. V. Anderson), of this young club deserve all credit for this successful function, which seemed; to augur a considerably better time for amateur athletics generally in this city. The Rev. Frank de Lisle acted as referee. '

Tlfe Caledonian -trophy, for . most points in men’s track events, was .tied for. by S. Dawson (Leith) and C. Simpson (St. Kilda). J. H. Opie (Hillside) won the Crown trophy for men’s field events, and Miss N. Hanlin, closely followed by Miss V. Baird (both of Dunedin Ladies’), won the Excelsior trophy for the most points in women’s events. Miss Hanlin, with a shot put of 34ft 4£in, unofficially broke her owu Hew Zealand record of 33ft 2fin. Cycling events were conducted by the Dunedin Amateur Cycling Club, all competitors being members. The Fitzroy trophy, for the most points, was won by C. Flowers, who turned in the most popular performance of the day by winning , the - three-mile handicap from scratch after taking a bad spill in the previous event. Dancing, and piping events were popular, and the dancing strongly contested. There was a strong entry also for t-lie interhouse marching, which the judges, Messrs A. H. Peattie and A. J. Adamson and Miss J. Thomson, pronounced good, although dressing and positioning and posture generally left room for improvement.
