RADIO TELEPHONE
COMMUNICATION WITH U.S.
DIRECT SERVICE TO OPEN FRIDAY
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 22. The opening for the first time of a direct radio-telephone service between New Zealand and the United States as from October 26 was announced today by the Acting Postmaster-General, Hon. F. Jones. < Mr Jones said that the service, which would be available daily, excluding Sundays, between the hours of 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., would, he felt sure, cement further the close ties which existed between the two countries. Tests which had been carried out indicated that, excellent speech could be expected over the circuit, and no doubt many friendships which were made while United States servicemen were in New Zealand would be renewed over the telephone circuit. A minimum charge of £3 15s as for a call of three minutes’ duration would apply, the- Minister said, each additional minute being charged at the rate of £1 ss. The charges were the same as those for calls between New Zealand and Great Britain.
