An uneasy quiet returned to Buenos Aires as a general strike ended normal business activity, says the ‘ New York Times ’ correspondent. In spite of the surface calm, however, there are many indications that the Argentine political pot is still boiling. The police are taking very unusual precautipns, mounted police sitting on horses in some central streets and holding their carbines. The police are reported to he making many arrests, including students who were released last week.

Opponents of Colonel Peron have gone into hiding, some in foreign Embassies. Colonel Peron is out of the Government, but continues to dominate it. The Cabinet, which is still incomplete, is composed exclusively of supporters of Colonel Peron and his chief henchman, Colonel Velasco, tlie reinstated chief of police. An anti-Semitic campaign began as celebrating bands of Peron supporters stoned individuals’ homes in the Jewish quarter of Buenos Aires with tacit police approval. Crowds carried portraits of Peron, and shouted : “ Death to Jews! Viva Peron! ” Police broke into a synagogue and arrested 20 youths, who were preparing to defend the building against the Peron supporters.
