JAPANESE WAR CRIMINALS FIRST TRIALS WITHIN MONTH LONDON, October 20. The first big trials of war criminals in Japan are expected to begin within four weeks, and the number of defendants may be as high as 2,000, says New Delhi radio.
General MacArthur’s chief legal adviser state/] in To'kio that the major war criminals to be tried are reported to include • General Tojo and Admiral Togo. The radio added that both Tojo, who shot himself on September 11 when about to be arrested, and Togo, who, it is understood, was suffering from heart trouble when he gave himself up to the American authorities on September 15, had, recovered. “ Not even the members of the Imperial Household are immune from possible prosecution for war guilt,” said Colonel Carpenter. He was replying to a question at a Press conference whether Emperor Hirohito might bo tripd. Colonel Carpenter added that the Mikado had not been investigated as an individual, but if the examination of State papers leads to the trial of the. Imperial Household, it followed none the less. Colonel Carpenter declined to say whether members of the present Cabinet were on tiie huge list of war criminals
