POPULATION INCREASE EXPECTED (Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 21. Streets in Turkey’s towns and villages were deserted to-day, except for the patrolling of soldiers and policemen, while the census was' taken, reports Reuter’s Istanbul correspondent. The people, forbidden to leave their homes, crowded windows and balconies waiting for the arrival of the census officials. The result is expected to show a 1,000,000 increase since 1940, when the population was 18,000,000.
