TOURIST RESORTS

LACK OF FIRST-CLASS ACCOMMODATION

Frequent reference has been made by overseas visitors to the lack of sufficient first-class accommodation, especially in holiday and tourist resorts which have been boosted by publicity folders, issued by the Tpurist Department and organisations such as our own (says the annual report of the Otago Expansion League). Of great importance is the provision of good meals, central heating, and adequate bathing facilities, especially the supply of private bathrooms. There are many hotels to-day, which, owing to restrictions placed upon them by the laws of the country, are quite unwilling to cater for the tourist, and mainly rely upon the sale of liquor. The granting of licenses to accommodation hostels at tourist resorts is a matter of importance. Travellers from overseas are accustomed to having alcoholic drinks and miss that amenity when visiting some of our resorts. It would appear that if we are to give the tourist the service he requires, some action in this direction is necessary. The league again suggests that the redistribution of hotel licenses, with conditions, such as the building of suitable hotels, would provide a solution in providing those comforts and amenities that the tourist expects.
