RESPONSE BY BRITISH CIVILIANS LONDON, October 20. Figures illustrating the extent of Britain’s war sacrifices’ by comparison with the United States and Canada are given in ‘ The Impact of War on Civilian Consumption,' issued by the Combined Productions and Resources Board Twenty-two per cent of Britain’s total labour force was in the armed forces or the civil defence, compared with 18 per cent in the United States and 16 per cent in Canada.

British munition workers worked substantially longer hours than those in the United States. British consumption of goods fell sharply in every category, whereas consumption in the United States and Canada increased. The broad conclusion reached in the report is that the material sacrifices made by British civilians towards winning the war were substantially greater than those made b.v either Americans or Canadians
