FORTY-HOUR WEEK DEMAND
OPPOSED BY MR CHIFLEY .: -SYDNEY, October 19. Mr Chifley is opposed to the union's demand for a 40-hour ,week in,all industries. He told New South Wales union leaders that the. general iritrb 7 duction of a 40-hour week at present would .upset Australia's economic st'a-: bility. - ' At a meeting of the Trades and. Labour Council last night, the president, Mr G. Anderson, - said the fight for the 404iour week, would be continued. The Labour. Council decided to call a combined meeting of ; the executive of the council and' union executives next Tuesday to consider "outstanding industrial disputes." It is understood that;- the meeting will consider the launching of a campaign for the 40-hour week in all industries in New South Wales.
A. one-day stoppage by more than 23,000 members of the Amalgamated Engineering • Union in Victoria -is threatened. The Melbourne District Committee of the union has recommended a one-day strike" to support; the claim for a 40-hour week.
