SOLDIERS FROM EIRE

SERVICE WITH BRITISH FORGES PUNISHED DEPRIVATION OF EMPLOYMENT RIGHTS (Rec. 8 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 19. Four thousand men who " deserted " the Eire army to join the British forces have been deprived of public employment and unemployment benefits for seven years. An order to this effeot has been signed by Mr De Valera, Prime Minister of Eire. The order, which affects men absent for more than 180 days, caused a lively debate in the Dail. The Deputy-leader of the Opposition, Dr T. H. Higgins, proposed that the order be annulled, describing it as " brutal, unchristian, and inhuman. These men have gone through five years of the greatest war in history ■and now they are sentenced to seven years of destitution and starvation." he said. "In this country we grew rich on the hardships and sacrifices of others. We gathered untold wealth because the war oassed us by. The least we can do is to be charitable and understanding to these men who, irrespective of nationality, have been through the flames of war."
