LAWN TENNIS
COMMITTEE MEETING . A meeting of the committee of the Otago Lawn Tennis Association was held in the secretary's board room on Thursday night, when there were present—Messrs G. I. Black (in the chair), F. L. C, Scrivener, L. Collins, E., B. Raymond, D. Campbell, W. Sherriff, ~R. Phillipps, A. T. Jensen, A. McMillan, L. Facer, E. J. Ruhen, and R. G. Sincock. The Otago Provincial Council of Sport wrote inviting a representative to attend a meeting to be held in the Council Chambers on 'Thursday, November 1, to discuss sporting fixtures for the centennial year, 1948.—Mr Sincock was appointed to represent the association.
The sub-committee appointed to meet the sub-committee from the Dunedin Lawn Tennis Union submitted a report on the discussion regarding the union becoming a subassociation. The report stated that the association's proposals were acceptable to the union. Mr Jensen submitted the rules to govern club matches, and these were approved. Mr Phillipps reported that he had obtained an honours board for life members, and he was thanked for his action.
The Otago Lawn Tennis Umpires' Association wrote advising the formation of an umpires' association and applying for a donation.—lt was resolved to congratulate Mr Scrivener on being the first president of the association and on his interest in the matter, and it was resolved to vote £2 2a to the association.
The New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association wrote stating that, in connection with the South Island champion- # ships, the finals of the men's singles and doubles must be the best of five advantage sets.—lt was left to the president and Mr Phillipps to draft a letter to the New Zealand Association pointing out that, as the association had hard courts, it did not consider it advisable to have five advantage sets in these events. Dr Fulton wrote thanking the association for appointing him an honorary vice-president, and enclosed a donation of £1 Is.
Mr Scrivener reported that he had arranged for the screening of the lawn tennis film at the Wallace Hall at 7.45 p.m. on October 29 and 31. The Social Committee reported that arrangements had been made to hold a dance in the Marigold Salon on Saturday, November 10. An invitation is extended to returned servicemen from overseas to attend this dance, and club secretaries are asked to forward the names to the secretary of the association. - ■ . '
The McMillan Cup victory tournament will be held on November 10, and entries will close on Noverhber 5.
The Competitions Committee submitted a report regarding . club matches for the coming season . N A and C grade matches will commence on October 27.—1 t was resolved that men's events in the A grade be the best of 17 games, all other events the best of 13 games. In all other grades matches will be the best of 13 games. It was decided again to open the membership of the United Club at a subscription of 10s per annum.
