ARGENTINE IMBROGLIO

PERON ACCLAIMED BY CROWD INDEPENDENT (RESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN NEW YORK, October 18. ' Colonel Peron, the former Vice-Pre-sident, after regaining his liberty, returned to power yesterday in a sensational counter-offensive against the navy and democratic forces, says the New York ‘ Herald-Tribune’s ’ correspondent at Buenos Aires. . Peron was released from Martin Garcia Island, where he had been held prisoner since October 13, and taken to an army hospital in Buenos Aires. Though free to leave the hospital, he remained there throughout the day, receiving callers. It was reported that a delegation consisting of Senors Listarini and Antille called on Peron and offered him the Government in General Farrell’s name. Peron is believed to have rejected the offer, explaining that he wanted to continue his Presidential campaign outside the Government. The National Broadcasting Corporation reported that monitors last night heard the Argentine radio broadcast an address by Peron to a wildly-cheer-ing crowd on the Plazo Mayo. Peron was introduced by General Farrell, who publicly embraced him, and said he would not turn the Government over to the Supreme Court. While waiting to hear Peron the crowd became impatient' and stoned Government House, and attempted to break down the doors leading to the Navy (Ministry. General Farrell said a new Cabinet will be formed by men who will guarantee the social conquests so far gained. He added that the civilian Cabinet announced earlier by General Alvarez “ lacked foundation.”

In a speech, Peron said he resigned his commission in the Argentine army to lead the Argentine workers to further victories. He urged the crowd, to disperse peaceably, but heavy shooting broke out in front of the offices of the newspaper ‘ Castica,’ which has been an outspoken critic of Peron. Crowds also attacked the offices of the newspaper ‘La Prensa.’ Trains ceased running from the capital shortly after midnight. In the meantime, Government House has announced the formation of a new Cabinet, including: Minister of the Interior, General Humberto Moline, who during the war expressed his belief in an Axis victory; Foreign Minister, Senor Juan Cooke; Finance Minister, Senor Armando Antdle; Minister or Justice and Education, Senor Hortensio Quiiano; Minister of the Navy, Rear-Admiral Abelardo Pantin; Minister of Public Works, Generals Juan Listarini.

The Cabinet announcement failed to mention the Minister of War, General Avalos, while Rear-Admiral Lima has definitely been dropped from the navy post.
