UNRRA CLOTHING DRIVE

@OO TONS SECURED VALUED AT QUARTER MILLION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 18. “ I am very happy indeed to announce that tlie elotiiing drive mad'g recently throughout New Zealand on behalf of Unrra was an unqualified success,” said the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, in a statement to-night. “ The great quantity of clothing given so generously filled 5,810 cases and 850 bales, and weighed nearly 600 tons. Oil a conservative basis the value of this clothing was more than £250,000, New Zealand currency.” The figures given, Air Fraser added, were exclusive of some thousands of pairs of boots and shoes. It was expected that all the clothing and a considerable quantity of the footwear would be shipped to Europe this week. 11 New Zealand has every reason to be proud of this effort, and all those who had the pleasure of contributing will, I am sure, be amply rewarded by the knowledge that the lives of many men, women, and children in Europe will be preserved in the coming winter through their generosity,” said the Prime Minister, who concluded by saying that on behalf of Unrra the Government extended its grateful thanks to all donors, to those who organised the appeal, particularly the National Patriotic Fund Board, the Lady Galway Guild, the New Zealand Red Cross Society, Corso, and all the voluntary organisations affiliated to those bodies, as well as to the many sections of voluntary workers who assisted with the collection, packing, transportation, and sorting of the clothing.
