ANDES AT MELBOURNE
ONE OF MOST MODERN LINERS AVERAGED 21 KNOTS ON VOYAGE MELBOURNE, October 17. Two large vessels, the Andes and the Stratheden, carrying more than 2,000 New Zealand soldiers and airmen from Britain, arrived at Melbourne to-day. In addition, a large number of Australians were on board. The New Zealanders on the Stratheden will be transferred hero to the- Andes, which will leave on Thursday for Lyttelton. The Andes (25,680 tons) is one of the world's most modern liners. She was built in 1939 for the Britain-South American service. The Andes left Britain a week after the Stratheden. Steaming at an average of 21 knots and stopping only at Port Said to refuel, she arrived at Melbourne two hours ahead of the Stratheden. There was great cheering on the Andes when the ship overtook the Stratheden off the Victorian coast late on Tuesday afternoon.
