Gladwin, who has been guard at Clinton for some years past, has received notice of his transfer to Invercargill on promotion. —Members of Balclutha railway staff entertained Mr E. Might, who is retiring after 40 years' service, the last eight having been spent at Balclutha as inspector of permanent way. Associated with the railwaymen were members of the football and cricket clubs, while there were representatives from other parts of the district. During the course of a happy function, many tributes were paid to both Mr and JkLre Hight, who have taken a prominent part in the social activities of

the railway staff. Presentations were made on behalf of the staff and the football and cricket clubs, and best wishes extended for their future welfare in retirement. 1 Bowling.—Milton club had a success- ' ful opening on Saturday. There was . a good attendance of local members and the president (Mr J. Cuff) declared the season open and called on Mrs A. Clark to roll the first bowl, which she did amidst applause'. Thereafter an enjoyable game was iplayed. the green being in good order for so early in the, season. The ladies provided afternoon tea and this added to the pleasure of the function. Tennis.—Milton tennis club opened the season on Saturday afternoon, the ■weather being favourable. Mr R. A. Morgan expressed the hope that members would have an enjoyable season

and plenty of play. A tournament was indulged in by players and afternoon tea was partaken of. U.S.A. Welcome Home.—MiltonBruce R.S.A. held! a very successful welcome home to recently-returned servicemen on Saturday night. Mr J. W. Keogh presided) over a big attendance, including a large percentage of returned men. The toast-list was a brief one, and speeches were interspersed with items by Messrs T. Roberts, G. Clark, and J. Healey, while , an enjoyable time was spent round the piano in community singing. The toast " Fallen Comrades " was honoured with dimmed lights and in silence, after which a verse of ' Lead, Kindly Light' was sung, this little interlude being most impressive. The function was one of the most successful yet held by the sub-branch.
