NEW BRITISH PLANES

VAMPIRE JET-PROPELLED TYPE LONDON, September 19. The Ministry of Aircraft Production has revealed some.details of the Vampire jet-propelled plane,' and the ■Hornet 1, which is largely of wooden construction. The Vampire, a twinboom, single-seater plane, powered < by a single <Je Havillarid Goblin engine,' has a speed .of over 500 miles aa hour. It is all metal, with a wing span of 40 fe,et and a length of 30 feet 6 inches. ■ The Hornet 1 is a single-seater powered by two Rolls-Royce Merlin engines with contra-rotating propellers. It has a wing span of 45 feet, a length of 34 feet 6 inches, and a speed of 470 miles an hour. Its range is 2,500 miles with long-range tanks, and its ceiling is 35,000 feet. It carries four 20-millimetre cannon.
