LOCAL TYRE MANUFACTURE

CONDITIONS OF LICENSES PRICES SUBJECT TO PRICE TRIBUNAL INVESTIGATION (Special.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 19. j The conditions under which licenses had been granted by the 'Bureau of Industry for the manufacture of tyres and tubes in New Zealand were given by the Minister of Supply, Hon. D. G. Sullivan, in a written reply in the House of Representatives to-day to a question hy Mr E. B. Corbett (Egmont). . The Minister said that these conditions included a provision for. submission as required of specimens of the tyres and tubes manufactured under the authority of the licenses in order that such specimens would be available for testing as to standards of quality. • Each of the firms to which licenses had been granted had stated in evidence to the Bureau of Industry that the locally-manufactured tyres would be sold at prices either lower than or at least equal to thoae of imported tyre® of similar grade and quality, added the Minister. The prices, as with all other commodities, would be subject to investigation by the Price Tribunal. The public could be assured that the Government would take every step within its power to ensure that the manufacture of tyres was undertaken in a manner that would be in the best interests of the country. Replying to a question by Mr W. J. Broadfoot (Opp., Waitomo) dealing with the stocks of motor vehicle tyres held in the Dominion, the. Minister said that the Ministry of Supply was at present negotiating with the Army j Department for the release of reconditioned and used tyres. A special representative of' the Supply Department was at present in ' London endeavouring to obtain additional supplies. The Government was advised by the tyre control in London that rubber was still a critical item and that immediate arrivals of increasing quan- j tities were still unlikely. !
