GREAT FAMILY RECORD "SUB." OFFICER COMES HOME (P.A.) AUCKLAND, August 31. One of the few New Zealand submarine officers- and a member of. a ramily which has given notable war service, arrived at .Auckland as • a " passenger " in the cruiser Achilles. He is Lieutenant L. E. Herrick, D.S.C, 11. N., and he is making his first visit home in 10 years.Lieutenant Herrick is one of the five sons of Mr E. J. Herrick,' of Hastings. Three joined the Air Force and were all killed, and two are in the Royal Navy. The airmen were Squadron-leader M. J. Herrick, D.F.C. and bar, Pilotofficer D. T. Herrick, G.M., and Pilot-officer B. H. Herrick. The fourth brother is Lieutenant-com-mander T. D. Herrick, D.S.C. and bar. Lieutenant Herrick entered the Royal Navy in 1936. His first submarine war service was in the Tigress, which, with her sister submarine, the Trident, 6ank five enemy vessels in northern waters in 1941. In another attack nearer. England they sank three more ships of a heavily-escorted convoy. One of the voyages Lieutenant Herrick made in the Tigress was to Russia. He was mentioned in despatches in 1941. Later he went to other sub-' marines, commanding several of them. He saw much service in the Mediterranean, and more recently has been serving with submarines which operated against the ' Japanese" from an Australian port: He was awarded the D.S.C. in November, 1942, " for courage and skill in successful patrols in His Majesty's submarines."
