KIR CHARLES PEARCE
Thsi week’s death notices contain the name of a retired naval officer of the Britsih Navy, who has been a resident -of Mosgiel since 1920, Mr Charles Pearce, R.N., retired. He was a native of Clifton, Bristol, England, and spent 25 years of his life in the Navy. He served in the Great War, and was present at the Gallipoli compaign, at the Battle of Jutland, and at Scapa Flow when the German fleet surrendered.. Convoy work was followed for 18 months of the war period. During his residence in Mosgiel he was very popular, and endeared himself to one and all. . He was—like his brothers in the Navy—a man of deeds, not words. His widow and one son—Mr Dan Pearce, at present in. the Air
Force at North Taieri air station—survive him. The funeral was largely attended, and the casket was -covered with many flora] tributes. The burial took place at East Taieri, Kev. Father Sexton, assisted by ttev. Dr Courtenay, rector of Holy Cross Seminary, officiating at St. Mary’s Church and at the graveside.
