RUGBY UNION
MEETING OF COMMITTEE Mr A. H. Cameron presided over a meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Football Union, which was held last night. SCHOOL TEAMS IN ,GRADE MATCHES. A letter was received from the secretary of tho Otago Boys’ High School. Club advising that the school’s teams in the intermediate, fourth, and fifth grade B competitions would not be able to keep their engagements for -August 18 and 25 and September 1 and 8, nor would the fifth grade A team be available for August 25 and September 1 and 8.
Mr V. G. Cavanagh, sen., expressed the opinion that it was unfair that the boys in the teams drawn against these school teams should be deprived of so many games just when the weather and the grounds were improving: Though they were all anxious to foster secondary school football, he thought that the' inclusion of these teams in grade competitions was, because of these breaks at vacation time, not satisfactory. Mr T. Grant agrqed with Mr Cavanagh, 1 adding that, some years ago, there had been a strong feeling that secondary schools should not take part in grade matches. Mr D. M. Spedding pointed out that the interpiediate grade had been introduced with a view to accommodating these school teams; but he agreed that in the lower grades the necessity for defaulting at vacation time was upsetting. 1 The Grade Committee’s recommendation that all matches unplayed by the school teams in the second term be regarded as losses by default was adopted, and it wms decided that the whole matter be taken up with the schools next Reason. TEAM MANAGER. Mr E. Kerr was appointed manager of the Otago team which is to play Southland at Invercargill on September 8. SUB-UNIONS’ MATCH.
The South Otago Sub-union advised that the match between its representatives and a combined team representing the other sub-unions would, subject to the union’s approval, he played at Alexandra-on September 1. The subunion also asked whether a match could be arranged between a team of its second grade players and, say, a fourth grade town team, either in Dunedin or at Balclutha.
The date for the match at Alexander was approved, and the matter of arranging for a fourth grade team to meet a second grade side from the sub-union was referred to the Flag Committee. It was decided to suggest to the South Otago Sub-union that its return match with a Metropolitan team should be played on the first Saturday in October, or earlier if possible. COMPETITION CLOSED. It was decided to close the second grade competition and declare Pirates the winner. At Mr. Spedding’s suggestion it was decided to endeavour to arrange, unofficial matches for the Pirates team for remainder of the season. THANKS. Tt was resolved, that a letter he forwarded to the Otago Rugby Referees’ Association thanking its members for ■valuable assistance rendered as ’ushers at the representative matches played in Dunedin this season.
