PORTUGAL’S INTENTIONS
WAR ON JAPAN SURRENDER GAME TOO SOON LONDON, August 18. The Prime Minister of Portugal, Dr Antonio Salazar, in a speech at Lisbon declared that Portgual had been preparing to fight Japan, but the Japanese surrender came too soon. He added that Portugal had signed a treaty with the Allies to join in the war in the
Far East to recover Portuguese Timor as soon as sufficient equipment was provided, and claimed, that Portuguese troops assembled in East Africa would have gone into action immediately when the Allies opened hostilities in Timor.
Lisbon radio says that the Japanese forces in Timor have given themselves up to the Governor.
