COMPETITIONS FESTIVAL

OFFICIAL OPENING TO-NIGHT

The forty-fourth festival of the Dunedin Competitions Society opened this morning, when a number of preliminaries in vocal and instrumental and elocutionary sections were heard. The festival will he officially opened, by the Mayor, Mr D. C. Cameron, to-night. An interesting programme will be presented, including the secondary school girls’ choir contest and a varied selection of vocal and instrumental classes. Morning recalls;— ELOCUTION. Judge; Mr W. J; Mountjoy - (Wellington). Character Recital, 12 and under 16. —Brian Parke and Olive Milburn. Recitation, Shakespearean, ladies.— Mrs Alice Bennett and Miss Mary Hopewell (Christchurch). INSTRUMENTAL. . ■ Judge: Mr Ernest Simpson (Christchurch). , Piano Solo, under 11.—Shona Gale, Vivienne Leslie, and Valda McArthur. Piano Solo, 16 and under*lß.—lan? Harvey and Jose Chalmers. VOCAL. . Judge:. Mr Victor Peters (Christchurch). National Song, gentlemen, own selection.—Mr Colin Sparrow and Mr Bryan Drake. Song for Girls, under 10.—Frances Applegate, 85 points, 1; Maureen McGrath, 84, 2; Joan Banwell, 83, 3. Very highly commended: Marie Downes. Highly commended: Dale Parata. Commended: Connie Conley. Fifteen competitors.
