TRIBUTE BY PRIME MINISTER (P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 18: Among the many messages sent by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, to service leaders and others on the occasion of V.J.-Da.y were the following:— To Major-general H. E. Barrowelough—At this historic moment of the defeat of Japan we recall with pride and gratitude the special contribution made" by the Third New Zea-, land Division under your command. It was at a critical moment in the war in the Pacific that the Third Division took great laurels;• for itself and for New Zealand arms. For this great credit and, our thanks go fo you sincerely.” To Lieutenant-general Sir i Richard McCreery, formerly commander of the Eighth Army:—“ On the occasion of final victory against Japan and all our enemies the Government and people of New Zealand join in extending to you our congratulations on the part you ■ have played. We recall with pleasure and pride your association with the Second New Zealand Division.”
i Other messages sent by the Prime Minister were to Field-Marshal Montgomery and other . British military leaders, the chiefs of staffs in New Zealand and the United States, the military leaders in New Zealand, the High Commissioners and Ministers overseas, the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs, British representatives in the Pacific and elsewhere, the staffs of the High Commissioner’s Office and others.
