SOCCER FINAL TO VICTORIA Although its margin was reduced, Otago retained its winning position for shield points at the conclusion of this morning’s, fixtures in the New Zealand Universities winter tournament now being conducted in Dunedin. With 17.) points in hand, Otago is 3) points ahead of Auckland, while Victoria is in third place with 11J, Canterbury fourth with. 10 points, and Massey fifth with lj. Lincoln’s small contingent lias not succeeded in netting any shield points. With the completion of the fifth round, the men’s hockey draw is now finished, while women’s hockey concluded this afternoon, but New Zealand University teams will meet Otago tomorrow afternoon. The table tennis competition will be continued this evening. while the fencing will finish tomorrow morning. \ Fast play characterised the Soccer final at Prospect Park this morning,
when Victoria-defeated Otago 2-1. The strong and accurate kicking of the Wellingotn ■ backs was in marked contrast to the uncertain play of the Otago rearguard, while both sides lacked finish in the goal mouth. For Otago, Richards. Sutherland, and- Swinburn were the best backs, and Hill, until injured, was outstanding, while Richardson, Mackie, Moore, and Sutton-Smith were the most impressive of the Victoria eleven. This morning’s -tournament results were as follows : FENCING. Second Round. —Otago defeated Canterbury, 59-43 (9 bouts to 7) ; Auckland defeated Victoria, GO-57 (9 bouts to 7). ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.
