All timber workers in Westland were idle to-day, following tlie
union executive’s instructions to cease operations until the Arbitration Court announces the decision regarding the award and special claims connected with the payment for wet time. A meeting was held this morning between the Hon. J. C’Brian, member for the district, and representatives of the union and the employers. No settlement was reached to-day, but prospects are bright for an early resumption of work. —Greymouth Press Association.
BUDGET REVISION 7 —INCREASE IN ESTIMATES.
In a statement to-day on the revised estimates following Japan’s surrender, the Minister of Finance gives war expenses details show-
ing a revised total of £139,000,000, compared with the original Budget estimate of £104,000,000, among the liabilities being £15,000,000 for gratuities. “It is clear,” added Mr Nash, “ that there will be no scope for the adjustment of taxation this • financial year.”—Wellington correspondent.
