Appreciation of the prompt action of the City Council traffic department in sending an official to destroy painlessly a kitten which had been badly injured when run over by a motor vehicle, was expressed to-day by a local citizen. He said tho hindquarters of the kitten had been crushed by a car in George street, and it was mewing piteously in the gutter. An official was sent immediately in response to a telephone .call, and the animal was put out of its misery. .

A very large meeting at Daunevirke, representative of town and country, passed resolutions (1) protesting against the taking of a census this year, and pledging to do all in it* power to prevent it being taken; (2) viewing with alarm any alteration in the parliamentary representation allowed under the country quota with-* out the electors having an opportunity of recording their views by means of a referendum; (3) protesting against the Government taking over the Bank of New Zealand. The Salvation Army, Dunedin, the Otago Centre of the St. John Ambulance Association-, and the Otago branch of the New Zealand Red Cross Society will each benefit to the extent of £IOO. The sum of £SO has been left to the Dunedin Amenities Society and also to the Little Sisters of the Poor, Anderson's Bay. Five cases of scarlet fever, two of tuberculosis, and one of lethargic encephalitis were reported to the Health Department in Otago during the week ended to-day.
