TRADE CONVOYS
NO MORE IN NON-COMBATANT AREAS
(Itec. 11.30 a.m.) RUGBY, May 28. The Admiralty announced that as from midnight to-day no further trade convoys will be sailed in non-combatant areas. Ships that would have sailed in trade convoys in non-combataut areas will be sailed independently. By night they will burn navigation lights at full brilliancy, and there will be no need to darken the ship. Figures just released regarding the loss of United Nations ships in convoy indicate how the U-boat menace was overcome as the war progressed. Losses in convoy in 1940 were one in everv 750 ships; in. 1941, one in 181; in 1942, one in 233; in 1943, one in 344; in 1944 one in every-1,000. Up to the beginning of this year 9,000 trade convoys had safely entered or cleared British ports carrying _ millions of troops and vast quantities of . war materials. " Pack " tactics adopted by U-boats led to heavy losses until the Allies were able to counter the packs with large numbers of small ships built specially for this purpose.
