SOUTH CANTERBURY RACES

HONEST SAL WINS BIG EVENT SPRINT TO ROYAL FLIGHT (Special.) TIMARU, May 26. The South Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting at Washdyke on Saturday attracted a big attendance. The track had made a good recovery after being flooded the previous week-end. The totalisator handled £30,862 10s, against £28.158 10s last year, an increase of £2.704. Came From the Back. Amorlad, having his first race for some months, was a surprise first choice for the principal event, the Elloughton Handicap, but after disputing last place for most of the journey, he was never dangerous and finished fifth. Atreus went to the front early and had a four-length lead through the back stretch i'rorn Great Coon, Kohara, Royal Rae, Hunting Charm. Silver Sal, and Pedantic, with Royal Writ, Amorlad. and Honest Sal in the rear. Atreus was first into the straight, but with a furlong to go Royal Rae was in front from Great Coon, Kohara, and Atreus. with Honest Sal creeping up on the outside Royal Rae appeared a likely winner a few chains from the post, but Honest Sal, with a characteristic bulldog effort, gradually wore him down to gain a last-stride verdict. Kohara huug ' on for third, a length in front of Silver Sal, with Amorlad and Great Coon next, and a gap to Atreus, Pedantic. Hunting Charm, and Royal Writ. Spills in Steeples. The Pareora Hack Steeplechase provided plenty of'thrills. only six of the 13 starters completing the course. Red Leader and Pilot fell at the third fence, Forage and Test Pilot went out at the next, which Valcron evaded,. Bright Feather crashing at the following fence. Pink Clover went to the front early, and had a substantial lead over the first circuit. He was still clear with a round to go, but fell at the second of the stand, double, and the riderless horse took Gay Fort to the outside rails before the latter's rider was able to get clear of him. Tenorman, who lost several lengths by standing flat-footed at the start, piloted the field through the back stretch, but approaching the home turn Gay Fort drew up to him, and the pair raced abreast to the last fence, with Double Light and Roman Son some distance 'back. Gay Fort soon drew away from Tenorman in the ran home, and beat him without any. pressure. Double Light struggled on for third money, four lengths in front of Roman Son, with a gap to Jacksonville and Strip.' Short Price. Royal Flight was installed the shortest-priced favourite of the day in the Soadown Handicap, and carried out her part by outclassing the field.. Salmi arid Foxchase were slowest to move off. and when the field had gone a furlong Green Note and Air Ace showed

out from Royal Flight, with BarT and Lord Advocate handy. _ Green Note, Air Ace, and Royal Flight were practically in line turning into tlie straight, but Green Note and Air Ace did not carrv on, and Royal Flight was left in front. The first to challenge her was Lord Advocate, who however, could not make much impression, and inside the final furlong Salmi' came on the scene from well back. The last-named put in some impressive work after losing a good deal of ground early, but, although she worried Lord Advocate out of second money, she had little chance of threatening the favourite. Riding Home was three leugthe away, and was followed by Ring-Chief, Foxchase, Green Note, Rawhamai, Bali, Air Ace, and Listen In in that order. The winner, weighted at 9.5, had an apprentice allowance of 71b, bringing her weight down to 8.12.

The Hurdles. Tatting was sent out a strong favourite for the Levels Hurdles, but after being well back until the last half mile, be was beaten into third place. Royal Chorus was the leader for the first five furlongs, but Prize Ring then ran to the front, only to run off at the fence near the mile post. This left Royal Chorus again in charge, but rounding the top turn Arabian Night ran to the front and led into the straight from Boolamskee, Tatting, Inscrutable, and Prince Dolomite, all in fairly close order. Boolamskee had Arabian Night's measure early in the run home, but the latter kept him up to his work, and he was all out to win by half a length. Tatting was a good third, three lengths in front of Inscrutable, with another gap to Prince Dolomite and Royal Chorus.

Straggling Start. The start of the Claremont Hack Handicap was somewhat straggling, Sir Tague, Robot, Salary, Night Fighter, Chelton, and Plutocrat being slow away. Whitley and Bowmore began smartly and piloted the field throughout. Whitley was two lengths in front entering the straight, and held on to that margin to the post. Sumra was a close third, a head in front of Dash o' Dink and Peter Gazelle, with Riding Home, Salary, and Mysterious Melody next. Close Finish.

The Kingsdown Hack Handicap for apprentice riders result*! in a close finish. Big Top, Miss Myra, and Joy Rosa were slow away, the last-named being a long way back over the early stages. Depth Charge led into the straight from Lord Broiefort, Receptive. Silver Mask. Chelton. Sphere, Baffling, and Siegform all in close order. Silver . Mask drew out early in the run home from Chelton and Sphere, and appeared to be in for a comfortable win, but Siegform and Baffling appeared with late runs, and in a close tussle Silver Mask gained a half-length verdict from Siegform, with a similar margin to Baffling, who beat Sphere by a head, with Chelton close up in front of Hurry Home, Receptive, Big Top, and Lord Broiefort.

f The Trofs. > Sir Raymond justified his favourit- ■ ism for the Ojtf'.ii Trot by a , fairly comfortable win. The third '• i choice, Buster, acted as pacemaker > from the early stages to the straight ' entrance, where he petered out. I Lou Hall was first to turn for home, > with Golden Dancer, Navy Queen, ■ Gamester, Sir Raymond, and Gamble I King all in the picture. Sir Raymond ■ drew to the front in the last furlong, and was never in any danger. Gamble 1 King came with a late run to gain second from Gamester, who broke nearing the post. Navy Queen was a length away. The second choice, Sunny Nel- ■ son,* broke up at the start, and followed ■ in the rear throughout. The Tcmpleton trainer, R. J. Humphreys, followed up his success ' with Sir Raymond by providing the winner, Windermere, of the Beaconsfield Trot, both horses being driven by J. McLennan, jtin. Gnlvena was responsible for the pace-making from the outset, and was still in front entering the straight. Windermere ranged up alongside Galvena commencing the final furlong, and the pair drew away to .fight out a stubborn battle, Windermere getting in the deciding stride right on time. Emu lons threw out a likely challenge Hearing home, but weakened into third place. Red Setter was three lengths back. Concluding results: — ELLOUGHTON HANDICAP, £4OO. lm 3f. 3-4—Honest Sal, D.
