SOCCER

TWO GAMES UNFINISHED & Fifteen minutes after the commencement of the second spell in the North; pin v. Mosgiel and Old Boys v. Maori Hill Association matches on Saturday afternoon the games were abandoned as a result of .heavy rain setting in, accompanied by a strong soutiierly wind. The results were:— Air Force 5, Roslyn-Wakari 3. Caversham H, Mornington 2. High School Old Boys 3, Maori Hill ,1. Northern 1, Mosgiel 1. Mornington v. Caversham. The ground was in fine playing condition at Mornington for the match' against Caversham, but with the deterioration in the weather the playprs soon found themselves in difficulties. Mornington were the first to score, and shortly after the kick-off' a fast rush culminated in Brownlee goaling. The pressure was maintained, but McAskill cleared strongly and was able to equalise from the movement. Mornington again went into the lead when the ball went into the net from a penalty kick. I'n the second spell Caversham .had the wind in their favour and were able to keep up a steady pressure. They were unable to equalise until Scott sent in a powerful drive, which the goalio was too late to stop. Shortly before time McLean scored the winning goal from well out, the game ending: Caversham 3, iMornington 2. Mr 1\ Georce was referee. Northern v. Mosfliel.

Good play was seen in the first spell when Northern met Mosgiel at the Gardens. Northern attacked first and quickly had the opposition in difficulties. After a number of unsuccessful attempts to goal. Mearns netted from close in. The play was fast at this stage, and several movements looked promising, but eventually broke down. Then Skinner cut in with a brilliant drive. After half-time the conditions became so difficult through heavy rain and the. strong wind that it was .decided to abandon the match. The filial score was: Mosgiel 1, Northern 1. Mr J. 'Welch controlled the game.

Maori Hill v. Old Boys. A good exhibition of the Soccer code was given in the early stages- of the game between Maori Hill ai)d High School Old Boys at Prospect Park. Old Boys were playing against the wind at that stage and were both accurate and fast. A brilliant shot by Dowsett was too fast for Mills, and later Howie, frcmi close, in, also got one home. Despite the hill team's strong defence, Ryan was able to find an opening to goal. At half-time the score was; Old Boys 3, Maori Hill 0. Karly in the second spell Maori Hill broke through, Chambers goaling. At this stage of the iplay conditions became such that it was decided to abandon further play,-and the game finished: Old Boys 3, Maori Hill 1. Mr McAskill refereed.

Roslyn-Wakari v. Air Force. The effects of the strong wind were apparently not as severe at Ellis Park 'as *t other grounds. It was soon evident that Air Force were the better team, lloslyu failing to develop the necessary combination, and towards the latter stages of the game their standard of play deteriorated, enabling tin; airmen to record a two-goal win. Smith secured two of the goals for the winning team, and the inside right and the outside left also contributed, while Welham, Burgess, and Ness were the scorers for the hill team. The game ended: Air. Force 5, ißoslynWaiknri •'!• The referee was Mr Dodds.
