COLOURFUL CEREMONY

(Rec. noon.) PARIS, May 25. In a colourful ceremony in the courtyard of the Palais des Invalides, General de Gaulle conferred the Cross of the Legion of Honour on Field-Marshal Montgomery, while French military bands played and the crowds cheered. General de Gaulfe,' who was surrounded by high British, American, aiid French officers, faced the British FieldMarshal, and said simply: "In the name of France and by the virtue of the powers conferred on me. I give you the Grand Cross.." He then draped Field-Marshal Montgomery's shoulders with a broad crimson sash, from which hung a large cross of white, green, and yellow.
