WAR GRATUITIES
AUSTRALIAN PROPOSALS BILL BEFORE HOUSE (Rec. 8 a.m.) CANBERRA, May 25. A Bill providing for payment of a war gratuity to members of the fighting services was introduced by "the Act* ing Prime Minister, Mr J. B. Chifley, in the House of Representatives today. ■,'■■" The gratuity was a gift for honourable service in the war, and wasr to be regarded as distinct from steps to he taken to meet the obligations of the nation to servicemen and servicewomen through legislation covering repatriation, employment • ' preference, vocational training, land settlement, and other matters, said Mr Chiflev,. The Bill provided for two rates of payment of gratuity—76s a month for those who had served overseas, and 15s for those who had served in Australia. Tho period of entitlement to the gratuity would terminate at -the date of discharge of a member or 12 months after cessation of hostilities, whichever, wat i the earlier.
