BRITAIN'S FOOD SHORTAGE
EVERY EFFORT TO LIFT DOMINION PRODUCTS
(Rec. 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 24. Despite the lack of ships every effort would be made to lift whatever quantity- of meat and other primary products Australia and New Zealand coirld provide for the United Kingdom, the leader of the United Kingdom food mission to Australia and New Zealand, Mr Banke.s Amery, said to-day. Mr Banikes Amery told the primary producers' conference here that not only was Britain's meat ration in danger, but there was a serious shortage of alternative foods, such as fish and poultry Other British rations were also in danger, including the butter ration of two ounces a week. There were also shortages of cheese, eggs, bacon, milk, and even margarine. Production to the utmost, said Mr Amery, would be a splendid contribution by Australia and New Zealand toward the stability of the war-devastated world.
