DACHAU SLAUGHTER

HORRORS ROUSE AMERICANS EVERY GERMAN IN SIGHT SHOT (Rec. 11.50 a.m.) LONDON, April 30. Scores of the guards at Dachau concentration camp were taken prisoner and dozens were slain by the Americans, who were enraged by the sights greeting them. They ranged through the camp, using machine guns, pistols, and rifles, says the Associated Press correspondent at Dachau. French, Russian, and Polish prisoners seized weapons from the S.S. guards and joined in the slaughter. Fifty railway, truck loads of horribly emaciated bodies was the sight which so enraged the American liberators that they went through the camp shooting every German within sight, adds the correspondent. An American soldier called to a colonel: "Come quickly, i There is one still alive." The j colonel climbed over a pile of bodies and found a living skeleton, with a « neck so small it scarcely seemed \ possible to support the head. The colonel lifted the man down, placed him in a jeep, and carried him to hospital, where plasma is keeping him alive. A train load of prisoners, mostly Poles, stood on the tracks for several days, and most of them simply starved to death. The clothing was torn from some and most of the bpdies carried great bruises. The British United Press correspondent reports that the Americans found the bodies of 1,600 murdered Jews buried in a wood near Dachau. The Americans forced the local inhabitants to unearth all the bodies and give them a decent burial, at which every available German over the age of nine was obliged to be present. Typhus is raging within Dachau camp.
