CARRIER'S DEATH

ACCIDENT AT WORK The inquest was concluded yesterday afternoon on Bernhardt Thorbeld Goodmanson, aged 62, a horse driver employed by the New Zealaud Express Company Ltd., whoso'death'occurred in the Public Hospital on April 7 following an accident on March 14, while he was at the {premises of, the New Zealaud Loan, and Mercantile Agency Company Ltd. This firm was represented at the proceedings by Mr I. E. Fitchett, and Mr. A. N. Haggitt appeared for the New Zealand Express Company. The coroner was (Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M. Dr \V. V. Macfarlane, house surgeon at the Public Hospital, said that two days following his readmission to the Hospital after treatment to his_ leg, Goodmanson complained of a pain in his chest, and he was treated for bronchitis and pleurisy. A condition of pulmonary embolus suspected, and the post mortem examination disclosed it. The opinion of witness was that death was caused by a pulmonary embolus derived from the right fluoral vein, and brought about by the necessity for having Goodmanson's left leg immobilised to treat the fracture.

Henry W. Reilly, a storeman, employed by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, said that on the afternoon of March 14, Goodmanson called with his dray to collect some sacks of grain. The sacks.were sent down by a chute, and after several had been loaded on the truck he heard Goodmanson call out, and found a sack lying across his right leg, which the deceased thought he had fractured. He was sent to the Hospital. \ The Coroner returned a verdict that death was due to (pulmonary emoblus (a clot of blood on the main artery leading to the lung), a fractured tibia, accidentally received by Goodmanson during his employment. The Coroner commented that this was one of those unfortunate accidents that occurred during a person's employment, and there was no evidence of negligence.
