EQUIPMENT SHORTAGE DENIED

(Rec. 8 a.m.) CANBERRA, April 26. Complaints about shortages had been magnified far beyond their importance, and fear unnecessarily struck into the hearts of parents of Australian soldiers, said Mr Coles, Independent, Victoria, speaking in the debate on equipment in the House of Representatives tonight. Declaring that he had three times visited New Guinea. Mr Coles said the only shortages which had occurred were unavoidable and beyond the control of any G.O.C. or other officer. There had been no let down by any officer of the Australian forces from the G.O.C. down to the lowest N.C.O. with any responsibility towards his men. Mr Coles added that the main complaint about shortages of equipment had been made in respect to Aitape. There it had been caused through an act of God. The surf had been turned into a raging sea, in which three United! States landing craft had foundered and aircraft had been grounded for rive days, so the troops could not be supplied. The troops, however, had been deprived of equipment only temporarily. '
