THE REDOUBT
PERIMETER BREACHED SURPRISINGLY FEEBLE DEFENCE DANUBE EASILY FORCED (Ree. 12.15 p.m.) LONDON, April 26. Advancing practically unhindered down the valley between the Danube and Czecho-Slovakia, Third Army spearheads are now less than seven miles from the junction of the Austrian, German, and Czecho-Slovak borders, says Reuter's correspondent. The Americans, farther west, are building up bridgeheads across the Danube around Regensburg, and meeting only smallarms and bazooka fire. Other Third Army units, supported by dive-bombers, fought their way into Ingolstadt. one of the oldest fortress cities of tlie Danube. » There is surprisingly light opposition to the Danube crossings, where the Allies had expected the Germans to do everything possible to prevent the breaching of the redoubt's perimeter. Significantly there are no reports of artillery fire contesting Patton's advance.
