STAGGERING BLOW
GERMANS LOSE 300 PLANES ALL BUT 47 DESTROYED ON GROUND LONDON, April 17. Allied Headquarters announced today that 900 German planes were destroyed yesterday, all but 47 of them on the ground. Thunderbolts and Mustangs of the United States Eighth Air Force, escorting bombers into Southern Germany, destroyed more than 600 planes on the ground, the largest number ever destroyed by Eighth Air Force fighters in one strafing operation. Three other enemy planes were destroyed in air combats. R.A.F. bombers were out in strength last night, with railway targets on both sides of the German-Czech border as their main objectives. Berlin was also bombed.
Lancasters, escorted by Mustangs, yesterday attacked German naval units at Swinemuude, says the Air Ministry.
Mustangs afterwards carried out a sweep in the direction of Berlin, where they met a number of enemy fighters, six of which were destroyed. One Lancaster is missing.
