—'Air' Passengers.— Passengers for the north td-dayj were Mr L. M. Wright (for Christchurch), Mr D. McLashlam, Mrs M.McClymont, Miss M. McClymont, Mr* C. Halstead and infant, Miss. D. Tinney, Major Church (for Wellington), Mrs A. Bell and infant, Mr and Mrs A. Callender (for Auckland)'. Mr and Mrs J. F. Ayson, of Warepa, have received a cablegram from their son, Newton, who is in England, stating that he has received hi* commission as second lieutenant.' At the annual general meeting of the New Zealand Hockey Umpires°Association,- held in Wellington last week, Mr H. Sew Hoy, of Dunedin, was elected president of the association for the ensuing year. The Very Rev. H. H. Barton advised the Synod of Otago and Southland at its annual meeting last evening that a radio message had been, picked up in Invercargill stating that the Rev. Mr and Mrs H. Davies, two Presbyterian missionaries, . who were last linown to have been interned by the Japanese, were both well and in comfortable circumstances.
At the annual meeting of the Synod of Otago and Southland yesterday the Theological Hall Committee reported that Dr S. F. Hunter, principal of the Theological Hall, was due to retire in July. The committee advised • that Principal Hunter would probably be invited by the General Assembly to retain his chair until the end of December, 1946. Dr Hunter was appointed to the chair of Old Testament studies in 1928, and in 1942 he succeeded Dr Dickie as principal of the hall. The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, announces that the King has been pleased to approve of the immediate award of the D.F.C.to Flyingofficer Phillip John Reid, R.N.Z.A.F., in recognition of the gallantry he dkr played in flying operations' against th« enemv in the South Pacific area. His mother is Mrs S. J. Reid, of Hastings. Professor J. It. Burt has been appointed acting-dean of the Dental Faculty of the University. of Otago following the resignation of Dr R. D. Dodds. and Mr F. •Wy Craddock has "been appointed sub-dean. Captain I. M. Chirnside has been appointed assistant lecturer in prosthetics. :; >' ■ A Wellington Association message, states that Mr J. E. Nichol, chief inspector of head office, Customs Department, has retired after 40 years' service, and will in future reside at Nelson. He joined the department in 1904, was'later stationed at Nelson, and after his return to the Wellington office went to Invercargill. In 1933 he was appointed .Collector of Customs- at Napier, and was promoted to collector at Dunedin in 1934. In 1935 he became deputy assistant comptroller at head office, Wellington. In 1938 he was appointed chief inspector of the department, and remained, in that position until his retirement, recently visiting all ports in New Zealand in the course of his duties.
