—Air Passengers.— Passengers for the north to-day were Mr W. Khouri, Mr H. L. Hill (for Christchurch) Mr H. T. Speight, Mr R. C. Greenslade, Dr and Mrs F. O. Mac Gibbon (for Wellington), Mr P. Barr, Miss M. Parsons, Mr and Mrs P. P. McSkimming (for Auckland).
Mr A. L, S. Cassie left this morning for Wellington. The Hon. T. O'Byrne, M.L.C., was a through passenger for Wellington by this morning's express. Messrs J. L. Salmond, A. W. Paterson, and Don Miller left this morning for Christchurch to attend a meeting of the Dominion Council of the Y.M.C.A.
Mr D. C. Jolly was a passenger on this morning's express, bound for Wellington. The afternoon call on the Auckland Stock Exchange was not held yesterday owing to the death of Mr Carlton Hay, who had been a member of the exchange since 1939. Mrs J. Souquet. jun., of 72 Maclaggan street, has been advised that her husband. Lance-corporal J. Souqueti who was formerly a prisoner of war at Stalag 344, is now safe and well. .Mrs M. Macdonald, of Omakau, has received news that her son, Flight-ser-geant A. M. Macdonald. who was reported missing on air operations over (Jermany, is now safe in an fltt.A.F. hospital in England. Lord Balfour of Burleigh, who is chairman of directors of the National Bank of New Zealand, and was recently elected to a seat on the board of directors of Lloyds IBank, has now been appointed a joint deputy-chairman of that bank.
Mr L. H. Bird, a former member of the engineering staff of the Dunedin City Corporation, has been appointed city engineer of Launceston. There were 24 applicants for the position. Mr Bird, who has <had wide engineering experience in England. New Zealand, and Tasmania, joined the staff of the Launceston City Council in September, 1943, when he took over the post of assistant engineer. On the guest list at the Excelsior Hotel are Mr J. A. Wilson (Ottawa), Mr and Mrs W. Peck, Mr Scott Young (Auckland), Wing-commander J. D. Hewett, Mr J. M. Buckeridge (Wellington), Mr J. O. Forsyth, Mr R. Y. White, Mr >H. The Colonial Secretary has appointed Sir Arthur Dawe, K.C.M.G., to be Deputy Under-Secretary of State for Colonies in succession to Sis William Battershill, K.C.M.G., who will assume the office of Governor of Tanganyika about the end of April.—British Offical Wireless. -*
