WARDING OFF SHARKS

DOMINION SCIENTIST'S COMPOUND

SUBSTITUTE IMPROVES ON U.S. FORMULA

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 17. New Zealand airmen who may be shot down in - shark-infested waters are now protected by a secret chemical produced as the result of work done by an officer of the Dominion laboratory of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Tablets of the chemicals are contained in a pouch attached to the lifejacket which every airman wears. In the water the tablets slowly diffuse. Both t the sight and smell of the chemical are" offensive to sharks, and for at least 24 hours the airman has 100 per cent, protection. The idea was first conceived in the United States and communicated _to New Zealand, hut as the raw materials could not be obtained here a substitute was eventually selected. It was tried out in Shark Bay., Australia, and found even more effective than the American formula.
