ACCIDENTALLY KILLED

SUB-LIEUTENANT E. G. SHERRIFF Temporary Sub-lieutenant (A) Ernest Charles Sherriff, who has been reported killed in an aircraft accident while serving with the Fleet Air Arm, was the second son of the late Mr D. J. Sherriff and Mrs O. Evans, 72 Hazel Avenue, Dunedin. Educated at the Caversham and Otago Boys' Higli Schools, Sub-lieu-tenant Sherriff spent some time as a laboratory assistant with the Milburn Lime and Cement Company, and later attended the Dunedin Training College. In his second year at the Training Col-

lege he left to enter camp at Burnham, and served as a quartermaster with the Ist Battalion, Otago Regiment. On being demobilised from this unit he was appointed assistant at the Mornington School, and later at the Benhar and Merino Downs Schools. Sub-lieutenant Sherriff left the latter school to join the Fleet Air Arm, and carried out his training in England and Canada. On the conclusion of his course he was awarded the Admiralty prize and was commissioned. Before proceeding overseas Sub-lieu-teuant Shsrrifl' was an active Boys' Brigade and Church worker. He served as a lieutenant, and Inter as a captain, in the 16th Dunedin Company (Caversham Presbyterian) of the Boys' Brigade, and was a Sunday school teacher and youth worker of the Caversham Presbyterian Church. His brother, Lieutenant D. G. Sherriff, is at present serving in a casualty clearing station in Italy. Another brother served with the forces ,in New Zealand!.
